MAESGLAS UNDERPASS COMMISSION

NEWPORT

---------------------------

DEADLINE 30th MARCH

---------------------------

FOR ARTISTS/COMPANIES

This is a Living Levels Landscape Partnership and Tin Shed Theatre Co. co-commission to offer an artist and/or group theopportunity to write a project brief and apply for up to £7,500 of funding through the National Lottery Heritage Fund to create a unique piece of art that can enhance an urban underpass situated on the nationally important Gwent Levels.

We’re looking for a company and/or artist to create an interpretive Artwork within the Maesglas Underpass. It’s about re-imagining space and creating a unique work of art that enhances peoples experience of travelling through.

Through working with the local community, there is the opportunity to create an interpretive Artwork at the Maesglas Underpass; a significant structure on the cycle route between Tredegar House, the heavily urbanised Duffryn Estate, and the Wetlands Centre. We feel this passage way has the potential to become a canvas that can tell a story of the Gwent Levels to local people and visitors.

It would be particularly effective if it introduced walkers/cyclists to the bird and animal life they could encounter as they approach the Wetlands. The work has the potential to be digital, visual, sculptural, notional, interactive, site specific and playful.

We want to use this commission to create an opportunity to bridge the gap between the residential hinterland and the environmental oasis of the Wetlands.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 30th MARCH 2020

INTERVIEWS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS: 24th APRIL 2020

SOME FAQ's

  • POWER: There is no power available on site. However, if your idea does require a connection to power, we are able to consider additional resources to support the installation of a sustainable energy source. Primarily solar.

  • INSTALLATION: The underpass will not be able to be closed for installation as it is used as a regular throughway. So, whatever your idea might be, please take this into consideration.

  • INSTALLATION: Digging, drilling, rigging, sculptural and structural modification is allowed/encouraged.

  • LIFE-SPAN: Artwork should have an indefinite life span. At least 10 years. Performance/event work will not be considered.

  • BUDGET: Should you successfully asked to attend an interview we will ask you to provide a rough budget of costs. This should include your materials, time, cost of installation and any additional staffing.

  • BUDGET: If you think you have an amazing idea but feel that it is unachievable on a 7.5k budget, please communicate it. We are able to assess each application based on its approach and merits and in specific circumstances cover additional costs. This might support a bigger physical idea, a more technical interpretation, more hands-on project or international collaboration.

  • PANEL: Applications are being reviewed by a local steering group made up of arts professionals, local residents, school children, Living Levels staff and Tin Shed Theatre Co.

  • DEADLINE: Should you be successful we would require the artwork to be completed by August 29th so that the unveiling of the artwork can coincide with our final Big Skies event.

  • FUNDING: This money could potentially be used as support funding should you wish to apply for funding elsewhere.
